When outdoor temperatures climb, staying comfortable without driving up electricity costs becomes a real challenge. The FOSSIL Solar Air Cooler addresses that problem by combining a high-efficiency evaporative cooling system with a self-contained solar power station. It is designed for patios, garages, workshops, RVs, tents, and off-grid cabins where standard air conditioning is impractical or too expensive to run. Unlike a conventional air conditioner that uses a compressor and chemical refrigerants, this unit pulls warm air through a water-saturated cooling pad. As the water evaporates, the air temperature drops and a powerful fan pushes the cooled air into the room. Because it runs on solar energy stored in a built-in lithium battery, the cooler can operate for hours without being plugged into the grid. The FOSSIL brand has focused on portable renewable energy appliances for more than a decade, and this model reflects that experience through reinforced housing, a weather-resistant control panel, and user-serviceable parts. Our Solar Air Cooler series includes products such as Rechargeable Solar Air Cooler, etc.
The cooling engine inside the FOSSIL unit uses a three-layer honeycomb cooling pad made from cellulose paper treated with anti-bacterial resin. A 12-volt DC water pump lifts water from the bottom tank to the top distribution tray. Water flows evenly across the pad while a high-static-pressure axial fan pulls air through it. The evaporation process absorbs heat from the air, which lowers the outlet temperature by 8 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit depending on ambient humidity. In dry climates the temperature drop is even greater. The system does not produce mist and does not add excessive humidity to the room because the air leaving the unit is cooled through evaporation rather than carrying visible water droplets.
The power system is equally important. The included 120-watt monocrystalline solar panel converts sunlight into DC electricity with an efficiency of up to 22 percent. That energy is regulated by a maximum power point tracking controller and stored in a 12-volt 40-amp-hour lithium iron phosphate battery. The battery supports more than 2,000 charge cycles and is protected against overcharge, deep discharge, short circuit, and overheating. Users can also charge the cooler with the supplied AC adapter when solar energy is not available.
